Job Purpose

To perform specialist sampling and preparation conduct research into improving existing sampling and preparation methods, develop and evaluate new ones.

The Responsibilities of this role will include but not limited to the following:

  1. Plans Organizes and supervises activities of subordinate staff to ensure effective and reliable services to clients
  2. Identifies and recommends improvements to processes to maintain quality, cost effectiveness, safety compliance, and other parameters.
  3. Drafts and distributes laboratory reports detailing results of testing and analysis
  4. Collaborates with interdepartmental teams.
  5. Operates, maintains and tests laboratory equipment, identifies problems when equipment fails and conducts or recommends repairs.
  6. Ensures compliance with environmental health and safety standards including the proper handling, storage and disposal of chemical agents.
  7. Imparts safety consciousness in all subordinate staff and ensure that all safety aspects are adhered to.
  8. Responsible for safety and health of others and is indirectly responsible for the safety of sampler’s sample prepares and Laboratory supervisors.
  9. Maintain equipment in working and calibrated state and ensure that data in LMS is updated and organize maintenance as necessary
  10. Conducting no-routine specialist investigations and produce written technical reports and recommendations.
  11. Ensure that the section operates cost effectively
  12. Responsible for evaluating the existing sampling and preparation methods and using most efficient techniques available
  13. Ensure performance assessments for subordinates are done timeously
  14. Control use of labour
  15. Train develop and motivate subordinates and maintain sound industrial relations and discipline in the section
  16. Performs quality control and quality assurance for the section.
  17. Regularly walk the plant to enforce strict adherence by sample stewards to standard operation practices
  18. Traces and corrects faults in procedures to achieve consistency and accuracy in analysis
  19. Perform to all other assignments that are given that are lawful and fair.

To be considered for this position, the candidate should meet the following minimum requirements:

  1. Grade 12 Certificate or equivalent.
  2. BSc Degree in Chemistry or equivalent (Analytical Chemistry with other courses) from a recognizable university
  3. Additional related qualification will be an added advantage
  4. Two (2) years’ experience in mining, metallurgical and environmental control laboratory
  5. Experience in analytical chemistry, sampling and sample preparation techniques and environmental control of a mining laboratory
  6. Computer literate and technical report writing

The successful candidate must be result oriented and have the ability to work with own initiative, ability to understand scope of work, paying particular attention to Company policies and Corporate objectives.
