ADVANCING LOCAL CONTENT: MOPANI’S COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC GROWTH

This week, our Technical Working Group (TWG) team joined the second in-person accreditation training for the Supplier Development Programme (SDP) in Solwezi, facilitated by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

As an Anchor (Buying) Company, Mopani remains steadfast in driving local industrialization in line with SI.68 on Local Content.

Mopani shared its experience as the anchor company, since the roll out of the pilot SDP of 15 companies , who will be supported over a period of 10 months. The programme is already reshaping our local supply chain through stronger capabilities, improved compliance, and greater market access for local suppliers.

KEY MILESTONES, DECEMBER 2025 TO DATE:

CAPACITY BUILDING: Successfully onboarded 15 companies, including 10 women-led SMEs and 5 artisanal and small-scale miners (ASMs)

STRONG GOVERNANCE: Established an 11-member Technical Working Group to drive oversight, innovation, and technology transfer.

MARKET ACCESS: Facilitated entry for previously unregistered ASMs into Mopani’s vendor system, resulting in success stories like our local silica supplier fulfilling major procurement orders.

ECONOMIC IMPACT: Since January, the combined total secured on orders for participating companies is over K20 million.

OPERATIONAL SUCCESS: A 35% increase in active workforce levels, and support with mine access through the donation of waste rock, and PPE compliance. With plans for in-house designed ESG training for all ASMs on the programme.

LOOKING AHEAD: THE 2026 EXPANSION STRATEGY

We are scaling our ambition. Our 2026 roadmap targets more than triple the number of local companies onboarded under the Supplier Development Programme, with a continued focus on:

  • Women-led companies & other SMEs
  • The Miners Feeding Programme
  • Manufacturers driving import substitution

We are proud to see the SDP model delivering real value for local businesses and the Zambian economy.
