MUKUBA UNIVERISTY STUDENTS TOUR MOPANI’S NKANA ANALYTICAL LABORATORY

A group of 53 Chemistry and Environmental Science students from Mukuba University in Kitwe conducted a familiarization visit to the Nkana Analytical Laboratory of Mopani Copper Mines PLC on February 20, 2024. Accompanied by four lecturers, the students aimed to deepen their knowledge of the application of chemistry in laboratory operations, specifically in the areas of process and environmental control. The visit provided them with a valuable opportunity to gain practical insights into the role of chemistry within the mining industry and its impact on maintaining operational and environmental standards.

During the visit, various Mopani specialists, led by Mr. Obed Mahenga, Manager of Quality Assurance and Analytical Services, dedicated their time to providing the students with practical insights and knowledge. This included the sampling of environmental pollutants, as well as the processes of sample digestion and analysis. The specialists guided the students in understanding the intricacies of sample preparation, digestion, and analysis across different sample types. Moreover, the students had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) program, which plays a crucial role in managing laboratory data and processes.
